'I traffic in facts': MSNBC's Craig Melvin fires back at Georgia Democrat who supports Trump
Democratic Georgia Rep. Vernon Jones told MSNBC anchor Craig Melvin that he is “paid to shape a liberal narrative” during a heated interview on Wednesday in which the lawmaker took exception to a question about whether or not he’s compensated to support President Trump.
Jones, who a member of Black Voices for Trump Advisory Board, was asked by MSNBC anchor Craig Melvin if he is paid to support Trump as a Democrat.
"Are you a paid campaign surrogate? Are you being compensated?" Melvin bluntly asked.
“Let me be clear. You get paid to shape a liberal narrative. You get paid to attack this president,” Jones shot back. "I don’t get a dime for this president. I don’t get a dime from the campaign. Everything I’ve done has been me and based on my principles.”
"To insult me, to say am I getting paid? That is disgraceful!"— Heidi Heitkamp (@HeitkampHeidi) July 30, 2020

Jones then started to discuss how African Americans are expected to oppose Trump but Melvin cut him off. “Sir, I did not raise your race,” Melvin said as bickering intensified.
“Let me finish now. Let me finish,” Jones said.
"No, no, wait. Whoa, whoa, whoa. You’re not going to imply that I asked that question because you’re Black," Melvin responded.
"So don’t ask me that. You only ask me that because I don’t fit your narrative. I don’t want anything from this president. It’s what I can do for my country and you need to accept that many other African Americans and others support this president because of his policies. And to insult me to say am I getting paid, that is disgraceful,” Jones said
“That’s representative of MSNBC and their narrative to keep Blacks silent who happen to support this president,” Jones added. “Why can’t I be like White liberals or other Whites, nobody questions if they’re getting paid, so do you ask Democrats [if] are they getting paid? Are you getting paid by Joe Biden?”
“You’re not going to imply that I asked that question because you’re Black," MSNBC’s Craig Melvin insisted after asking me if I were being paid to support President Trump.
He’s right. I’m not going to “imply” that he chose to impugn my motives because I am a Black Trump-supporter; I’m going to come right out and say it. MSNBC asked me a question it would never dream of asking a Black Democrat like me if I were on their station defending Joe Biden.
The network did it in order to perpetuate a myth that makes its predominantly-White, liberal audience members feel good about themselves. The myth is that the only African-Americans in the country who support the president are financially motivated hucksters putting on a minstrel act for some imaginary cigar-chomping conservative White man.
Despite Mr. Melvin’s protestations, I cannot recall a single instance of the network asking a question like that of any one the deep roster of Black faces it has on to defend every embarrassing gaffe and racially insensitive remark that comes out of Joe Biden’s mouth.
MSNBC pulled the exact same stunt with my fellow Trump-supporter Bruce LeVell last week.
It’s a narrative that MSNBC’s White viewers crave because it lets them feel like one of the “good Whites” who stand selflessly on the side of poor, helpless Black people — who they casually assume are universally in favor of the big-government policies favoreSince then, President Trump’s performance in office has delivered more genuine economic prosperity and social progress to Black Americans than any of his predecessors, Obama included. The results have convinced many more Black people who are “supposed to” vote for Joe Biden to come over to the MAGA movement.
I am one of them — and not only was I not paid to make my decision, it didn’t even require me to adjust any of my principles or beliefs.d by their White “allies.”
It’s a demonstrably false narrative. In 2016, more than 1.3 million Black Americans cast their ballots for Donald Trump, a marked improvement over Mitt Romney’s performance despite a desperate campaign by MSNBC and other mainstream media outlets to convince us that Trump was an unforgivable racist.
I was elected in Georgia as a Democrat in three separate decades. I don’t support Donald Trump because I’ve changed my ideas on what’s important; I support him precisely because I have not changed.
I got involved in politics in order to help working people in my community — especially the Black people who had gotten the short end of the stick in successive Democratic and Republican administrations — not to join in the social crusades of an over-educated and overwhelmingly liberal elite.
I support Donald Trump because he is objectively better at lifting Black people — and all people — out of poverty and into prosperity and upward mobility than any big-government Democrat has any hope of being.
MSNBC’s cynical question, posed to me and my fellow Trump-supporting African-Americans, is intended to intimidate us and keep us from expressing that plain truth. If MSNBC can get away with casting people like me and Bruce LeVell as paycheck-hungry, desperate sell-outs, then its viewers can go on pretending that Black Trump supporters like us do not exist.
They won’t be able to play that game after November, when the president will outdo his 2016 support among Black voters. Are they going to imply that millions of us are all being paid?

Tucker Carlson grills Jim Jordan on reigning in Big Tech : "Why would Google give you money and why would you take it?"
Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan had a fiery clash with his Democratic colleagues at Wednesday's congressional hearing with tech giants.
Jordan grilled Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai over Google's alleged search engine bias against conservatives and whether Pichai could commit that Google will not interfere in the upcoming election to benefit Joe Biden.
However, Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-Pa., appeared to dismiss Jordan's concerns as "fringe conspiracy theories."
"Mr. Chairman, we have the email," Jordan responded, referring to an email written by a Google staffer that suggested that the tech giant aided Hillary Clinton's campaign in 2016.
Committee chairman David Cicilline, D-R.I., scolded Jordan for interrupting Scanlon's questioning. Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., joined in by ordering the Ohio congressman to "put your mask on."
"Mr. Raskin, you want to talk about masks? Why would the Deputy Secretary of the Treasury unmask Michael Flynn's name?" Jordan shot back.

Jordan to Raskin:
"Mr. Raskin, you want to talk about masks? Why would the Deputy Secretary of the Treasury unmask Michael Flynn's name?"
The Deputy Secretary of the Treasury who unmasked Flynn was Raskin's wife, Sarah Raskin... pic.twitter.com/3VVKJ8HV1G
That was in reference to Raskin's wife, Sarah Bloom Raskin, who was revealed as one of the Obama-era appointees who requested the unmasking of then-incoming national security adviser Michael Flynn.
"What I want to know is if someone comes after my motives for asking questions, I want to get the chance to respond," Jordan told Cicilline, who formally recognized Scanlon to continue asking questions.
Fox News' Tucker Carlson had Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan on his show tonight to discuss what we’re doing about Big Tech’s censoring of conservatives and grilled him on the issue.
Watch:
Tucker really wanted to know what these consequences are that lawmakers speak of when it comes to dealing with the censorship of conservatives by Big Tech. Jordan argued that modifying Section 230 is a big one. He also noted that the DOJ is investigating some of these companies for antitrust violations.
Tucker specifically asked if there would be any consequences of Big Tech between now and the election, considering how difficult it is to win an election with Big Tech censorship going on, and Jordan essentially suggested that we’ll have to win the election in order to do something in Congress because Republicans in the House aren’t in control.
Tucker then asked Jordan why Google, the second highest contributor of his campaign in the last election cycle, would donate to his campaign AND why would he take the money? Jordan basically said he has no problem taking their money but it doesn’t change who he is, and then to defend himself went back to the fact that he challenged Google in the hearing today on how they tried to get Hillary elected.
In a frustrated moment, Tucker reminded Jordan that he’s a talk show host and he knows that already and basically asked Jordan where is the effort to remove the liability protections from these companies? Jordan pointed to Josh Hawley who is working on it and said his staff is working on it as well, but noted that none of it happens if we don’t win back the House in November. Tucker again noted that it’s going to be difficult to win the election if Big Tech continues to interfere and just pointed out the frustration of himself and his viewers.
The interview ended cordially, of course, as the interview wasn’t really adversarial. Tucker simply asked some tough questions and wanted Jordan to know that Republicans are fed up with waiting on this to happen.
Not trying to be too cynical here, but asking for a victory in another election to accomplish something big like removing liability protections from Section 230 reminds of the failure of Republicans to actually repeal Obamacare when they promised they’d do it if they won the 2016 election. Just sayin’ that people aren’t going to keep buying into this ‘we must win’ argument if Republicans aren’t going to keep their promises. That’s not to say they haven’t kept some of their promises, but Obamacare was a BIG one and they failed to keep their promise.

Twitter has temporarily halted President Donald Trump’s son from tweeting on its site after he shared a video riddled with unsupported claims about the coronavirus
Twitter restricted Donald Trump Jr.'s ability to tweet after he posted a video featuring a doctor making false claims about coronavirus cures and stating that people "don't need masks" to prevent the virus from spreading, a Twitter spokesperson said Tuesday.
Some of the account's functionality, including the ability to tweet, will be limited for 12 hours, the spokesperson said.
The video, which was published by the right-wing media outlet Breitbart News and went viral online on Monday, featured a group of doctors making false and dubious claims related to coronavirus, including that masks are unnecessary.
Twitter (TWTR), Facebook (FB) and YouTube removed the video after it started to go viral.
President Donald Trump also retweeted multiple versions of the video on Twitter, but he did not upload a version of the video to the site. His son did, which is why Twitter only took action against Trump Jr.'s account, a company spokesperson said.
Andy Surabian, Trump Jr.'s spokesperson, had tweeted earlier that Twitter had suspended the president son's account. Twitter said in a statement that the account had "not been permanently suspended."
Twitter has asked the President's son to delete the tweet with the video. The company has already removed it from public view.
Surabian said in a statement to CNN that Twitter's move was "further proof that Big Tech is intent on killing free expression online."
Trump Jr. starts by noting that “this never happens to someone saying something that benefits the left, it only hurts conservatives.” He adds that his tweet that earned Twitter’s ire never said the video was ‘gospel’, but only that it’s a must watch because it goes against the narrative that people being force fed by the media.
He then holds up a story from The Hill newspaper, saying “Twitter has no problem saying that coronavirus disinformation spread by the Chinese government does not violate their rules.”
He also shows a copy of a tweet from CNN’s Jake Tapper, where he tweeted on July 3rd a CNN article entitled “Study finds hydroxychloroquine helped coronavirus patients survive better.” Below is the tweet:
Study finds hydroxychloroquine helped coronavirus patients survive better - CNN https://t.co/QQsBcw1VJ6— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) July 3, 2020
Trump Jr. asks “why is Jake Tapper not spreading disinformation, but I somehow am?” He adds that he’s not claiming to be a doctor, but that he only put a video out there that challenges the narrative. He added “because I have a large platform, I’m canceled.”

Dave Portnoy accuses Sunny Hostin of telling 'a flat lie' about him
Dave Portnoy accused Sunny Hostin of lying about him on Monday after the daytime talk show dissected the president’s decision to speak with the controversial media mogul.
President Trump sat down for a candid interview with Portnoy last week to discuss a variety of topics, including Twitter and the coronavirus outbreak. The wildly popular interview has been viewed millions of times – but Hostin wasn’t a fan.

President Trump sat down for a candid interview with Portnoy last week to discuss a variety of topics, including Twitter and the coronavirus outbreak. The wildly popular interview has been viewed millions of times – but Hostin wasn’t a fan.
“It didn’t strike me as odd, at all, that [Trump] chose to sit with Dave Portnoy, because Dave Portnoy is such a controversial figure. I mean, he’s had many of his employees quit because of racism, he called [Colin] Kaepernick an ‘ISIS guy’... over a dozen women, Barstool Sports reporters refused to sit down with HBO because they feared rape threats, he’s been on video using the n-word and, so, it’s not surprising to me that Trump would sit down with someone with that kind of reputation,” Hostin said.
Portnoy quickly took to Twitter to defend himself, noting that HBO did a “full story” on him, he’s never made a rape threat so Hostin’s claim is “a flat lie” and his controversial use of the n-word occurred when quoting lyrics to a rap song.
“Context matters,” Portnoy wrote, adding "#FakeNews."
I made it to View!— Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) July 27, 2020
1. @soledadobrien did full story on me for HBO so that’s a flat lie
2. Never made a rape threat. That’s a flat lie
3. Sang a lyric to Ja Rule song on camera 5 years ago to announce he was performing at our Super Bowl party. (Context matters)#fakenews https://t.co/MjKU50p0Qd
“The View” did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Barstool Sports has emerged as one of the most influential and popular new media companies in America, but has become more and more polarizing along the way. Last year, HBO’s “Real Sports” aired a detailed look at the company, which was anchored by Soledad O’Brien.
Earlier this month, Portnoy offered an apology to his employees over resurfaced remarks he made several years ago about Kaepernick despite previously vowing he would not "bend the knee" to the viral cancel culture mob.
Portnoy initially defended his remarks, insisting it was "literally a joke from 'The Office'," while acknowledging they wouldn't be tasteful today and dismissed his critics who he thought were "haters" who had wanted to get rid of him for years.
Portnoy struck a drastically different tone a few days later with a video message mostly addressing his own staff.
"I wasn't going to apologize because I knew I was trying to be funny. I wasn't trying to offend. The intent was to make people laugh," Portnoy said. "Here's what happened: unbeknownst to me and something I didn't plan on doing, I alienated a lot of the people who work for me now."
He explained that over the years his company has hired more minorities and women, insisting they shouldn't have to "defend" him or working for the company.
"I did a very poor job in that first video making it clear who I believe I was responding to, which is just pure Barstool haters," Portnoy continued. "I don't care what people who don't know me think about me. I care very much about people who do know me and work at Barstool and if they're bringing up concerns and issues, I'll always f---in' listen. And they have been bringing up the issues. They're like, 'You have to admit this is f---in' wrong.'"
Portnoy continued, "I should have had their back from the very beginning and been like, 'Yep, I wish I didn't f---in' say that s---, I'm sorry.'"
